    How to Port Forward Your Router for PlayStation 4

    If you are gaming using PlayStation 4, then NAT Type 2 is your end goal. This NAT type works by connecting your console to the internet via a router through port forwarding. Once you attain NAT Type 2 on your PS4, your router will be aware of your PlayStation and forward incoming packets to defined ports to your PlayStation. Your PlayStation will also be able to receive incoming packets and connection requests from other gamers online. Also, you will be able to host multiplayer games without chat and video limitations.

    The NAT type guarantees users of an IP address. Most users have their router as an intermediary between their private network and the internet through NAT (Network Address Translation). NAT also converts the public IP addresses into private addresses, such that users can have multiple private IP addresses from one public IP address. Therefore, your device will support multiplayer games, videos, and chats for a fantastic gaming experience. This implies that if you have a different NAT type, either NAT Type 1 or NAT Type 3, you will need to port forward for a seamless gaming experience.

    When port forwarding PS4, it is vital to set up a static IP address for your PS4.  This way, you will be sure that your PS4 will get the same IP address every time you turn it on.

    How Do You Find Your PS4 IP Address?

    If you game online, you know that lagging is one of the nightmares you will likely face while gaming on your PS4.  Lagging makes it difficult for you to connect to the gaming servers. This also makes it difficult to chat as the voice is not clear or does not work. The good news is that you can stop this and improve your experience with port forwarding.

    To port forward on your PS4, you need your router and PS4 IP addresses. The IP address comprises a series of 4 digits separated by a dot. Setting up a static IP address ensures that your console has the same address within the local network. This way, you will counter the risk of the port forwarding rules stopping due to a change in the IP of the device by the router.  This is a common occurrence, especially if you let your router manage the IP addresses.

    How to Port Forward PlayStation 4

    1. Go to the PlayStation 4 menu and select Settings.
    2. Scroll down to Network, and select View Connection Status.
    3. This option allows you to view your PS4 IP and MAC addresses, which likely takes the format 192.168.1.xx or 192.168.0.xx. Note down your IP address as you will need them in the next steps.
    4. Log in to your router, using your username and password;
    5. Assign a static IP address to your router manually using the IP address that you have noted from your PS4.
    6. Navigate to port forwarding rules.
    7. Add rules for TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 and UDP 3478, 3479.
    8. Now reboot your router to effect the changes and test your ports to check whether they are open.

    Why Do I Need to Change My NAT Type Using PS4 Port Forwarding?

    The Network Address Translation (NAT) is a vital consideration in multiplayer games as it affects traffic. If you are an active gamer, the NAT will dictate who you play with. A poorly set NAT will create problems, necessitating a NAT change through port forwarding.

    Finally, with the above steps, you should port forward your PS4 through the router. The forwarded ports will go to the IP address set for your PS4 and reduce the barriers, delays, and lag in online gaming. While port forwarding improves your gaming experience, it is worth noting that this option is not available in all routers, and if this is the case for you, you may need to explore other options such as UPnP and DMZ. Alternatively, you can upgrade your router to one that supports port forwarding for the best experience.
