Secure File Transfer Protocol, or SFTP for short, is a protocol that transfers files over a network securely. To effectively use this protocol, you must set up the server first.

Allowing access to the SFTP server is the next step; you need to forward port number 22. Port forwarding sets up communication with external devices such as an SFTP server. This guide will walk you through the entire procedure for SFTP port forwarding.

Port Forwarding SFTP – What do You Need

Before we can move on to forwarding ports, we need to make sure everything is in place. Here is a list of everything you need for SFTP server port forwarding.

    • You must have downloaded and installed SFTP.
    • Note down your router’s IP address.
    • Also, note down the system’s IP address while you are at it.
    • Finally, define the TCP and UDP ports for SFTP server port forwarding (the default ports are mentioned below).

SFTP Server Port Forwarding – A Step-Wise Guide

We can start to forward ports if you have all the requirements sorted. Here are the detailed steps for SFTP port forwarding:

    1. Open a web browser.
    2. Now enter your router’s IP in the search bar.
    3. Hit Enter
    4. Use your user credentials (username and password) to log into the settings.
    5. Navigate through the dashboard and search for the port forwarding section.
    6. Open the said window and enter the system/device’s IP address.
    7. Now enter the default TCP and UDP ports for SFTP port server forwarding.
    8. Port number 22 is the default port number for SFTP.
    9. Select the Apply button and save changes.
    10. Restart your router. It should make the changes visible.

How to Open Ports Behind CGNAT

Can’t forward ports due to CGNAT? Well, that is an issue because CGNAT complicates the port forwarding process. ISPs use this technique to conserve the IP pool and bandwidth. CGNAT can help service providers assign the same public IP to different customers. But this is what can create issues later.

    Bypass CGNAT

But to get past CGNAT, you need a port forwarding add-on to forward ports without any hassle.

Learn more about how you can utilize a port forwarding add-on to bypass CGNAT in a few clicks.

A secure way to open all ports

If you struggle with port forwarding, it may be because it is sometimes difficult to follow along. Honestly, the differences in the interfaces of various routers can make it challenging to navigate through specific instructions.

Up next, your ISP can also prevent you from port forwarding SFTP. That is because a few security risks are attached to the procedure. Your system’s firewall also rejects requests due to the same reason.

But you can easily bypass all these problems with a port forwarding add-on. This feature provides you with a simple and severe way to forward ports. Also, it allows you to improve your gaming experience and manage ports, all with only a few clicks.
