Getting Started With League of Legends Port Forwarding

Routers feature a basic firewall, which is also a security feature. This firewall blocks incoming requests from the internet, preventing hacker attempts and unauthorized access to your system. However, games such as League of Legends will play better if you open some ports. Port forwarding League of Legends improves your gaming experience by opening your connection to other players and allowing them access to your home network. This way, you will host the game, chat, and video call other players with no lags, giving you a quality gaming experience.

Things You’ll Need Beforehand

Before port forwarding League of Legends, you will need the following details beforehand:

  • The IP address of your router;
  • The IP address of your gaming console could be your PlayStation, PC, or Xbox One.;
  • A list of the TCP and UDP ports of League of Legends that you need to forward.

Finding your Router IP Address

You will use your router’s internal IP address to communicate. This address is also useful when you want to log in to your router and access its set up pages for configurations such as port forwarding and Wi-Fi password change, among others.

To find this address, use the Command Prompt and follow the steps below:

  • Click the Windows Start icon, and on the Search bar, type Command Prompt
  • On the open Command Prompt, type ipconfig/all
  • You will see your router’s IP address next to the Default Gateway

How to Set Up Port Forwarding

Port forwarding League of Legends is a useful trick as it improves your gaming experience, enabling you to play this game with minimum disconnections, lags, and pings. However, very few gamers are aware of the port forwarding process, yet this process is simple with the following steps:

  • Log in to your router. With your router’s IP address, you can log in to your router using the steps below:
    • Open your chosen browser. Routers feature a web interface, implying that you will need a web browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer to log in.
    • Enter your router’s IP address on the Address bar and press Enter. This action will open a window prompting you to log in.
    • Use your router’s default credentials to log in or the updated logins if you had changed them in the past. If you have forgotten your router credentials, you will need to hard reset, but this should be the last resort as you will lose all your router settings.
  • Click the Add Service tab, and in the appropriate box, enter the IP address of your PC or gaming console.
  • You can also add a name in the Service box. This name will not affect the configuration but serves to remind you why you created this port forward entry.
  • Select your chosen protocol in the Protocol dropdown. If your router has the Both protocol, you will make one entry. Otherwise, you will need to create two entries for the TCP and UDP.
  • Enter the UDP and TCP ports of League of Legends in the appropriate boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, you will enter the lowest number in the left Global Port Range and the highest number in the right Global Port Range. If forwarding a single port, enter this number in both the right and left Global Port Range boxes. Renter these ports in the Local Base Port box.
